The world oldest Grenache Vine (Over 170 Years Old)
The Land
The Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache was grown on sandy soils situated in the old “Seigersdorf” or “Light Pass” area of the Barossa Valley. This single-vineyard is believed to be the oldest surviving and producing Grenache vineyard in the world, planted in 1848. Marco Cirillo, the current generation proprietor, takes care of this beautiful 170-year-old block.
Vinification
The Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache is a true expression of this variety grown on beach-like sand. There is a minimal approach to oak, with this wine maturing in well-seasoned barrels for a few years before release.
The wine
This wine has attractive aromas of dark fruit, dried herbs, and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied with intense yet delicate flavours of cherry, aniseed, white pepper, and savoury notes. The tannins are soft and subtle with exceptional length. There is a real balance between primary fruit and soft, linear acidity. A beautifully seamless wine. One of the few Australian Grenaches that will reward over a decade of cellaring.
