he Land
Masseria del Pino is truly tiny - one hectare of 120-year-old bush vines in Contrada Pino tucked away, out of sight at 800 metres of altitude. Planted with Nerello Muscalese and a field blend of whites, Cesare Fulvio and Federica Turillo makes three wines from the tiny vineyard, all without added sulphites. The couple moved to Etna from their nearby native Catania, leaving their jobs to seek serenity in the Northern face of Etna. Despite the goldrush atmosphere to gulp up vineyards and bulldoze historic terraces to capitalise on the worldwide popularity of Etna, the estate has remained the same farm with olive trees, chestnut, oak & cherry trees surround the vineyard. The traditional Palmento (winery) on the property is used for winemaking. Artisanal and minuscule annual production of 250 cases that we are extremely excited to bring to you all.

Vinification
There was skin maceration for a day and a half, the grapes are then pressed in a vertical basket press. Fermentation and ageing (9 months) were done in 500L chestnut barrels. No sulphur is added at any stage. 

The Wine
“Caravan Petrol” is a cheeky name for the phenomenon that Federica and Cesare have observed of newcomers buying land for vineyards on Etna, completely changing the landscape with bulldozers and other machinery in an effort to profit off of Etna's popularity. It is also a nod to a Neapolitan song from the 1950s with the title “Caravan Petrol”. Tropical fruit punch that kind of fruity, aromas of orchards on the nose. Refined acidity and slightly chewy texture, smooth mouthfeel to complement the fruits and minerality of the wine. Very well-balanced. A wine with nuance.
